How often should I see my dermatologist?

The skin is the largest organ of the body—and the most exposed. It protects you from the elements while fighting bacteria and regulating the body temperature. Because skin is an organ, that leaves it susceptible to certain problems such as cancer like any other cancer in the body. According to The Skin Cancer Foundations, over 9,500 Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer each day. These statistics are staggering, but the good news is that skin cancer is the easiest to see and diagnose in the early stages for successful intervention and treatment. At Keys Dermatology, we encourage patients to visit once a year for a skin cancer screening.

What happens during a skin cancer screening?

Skin cancer screening is done right in the office of Keys Dermatology. Our dermatologists will evaluate the skin from head to toe to look for signs of skin cancer. Skin cancer may be represented by a wound that never heals, a skin tag that has developed, or changes to moles that have been present on the skin for years. Any areas of concern are biopsied by removing a small portion and sending it to a lab for further evaluation. If skin cancer cells are found, the dermatologist talks to the patient about their options.

What if I have other skin concerns?

Everyday patients will find that one dermatology appointment a year for a cancer screening is beneficial for them. But patients with other problems, such as rashes, infections, or other conditions may need to see a dermatologist on a more regular basis. Conditions such as acne are often evaluated, diagnosed, and monitored over time with treatments. Conditions that come up, such as hives, hair loss, or psoriasis may require more regular appointments with the team of Keys Dermatology in addition to regular skin cancer screenings.
