What to expect at a dermatology appointment

Planning your first visit to a dermatologist might seem like a simple and straightforward process. Whether you need a professional to evaluate a strange rash or help you find a solution to your acne, an appointment with a dermatologist can provide the answers you need for healthier, more beautiful skin. But what happens during your first visit? How should you prepare for your appointment? These are common questions asked by patients who call into Keys Dermatology for the first time to schedule a visit with our team, and we are here to provide the answers!

What happens during the first visit?

Patients should always arrive about ten to fifteen minutes prior to their appointment time. This allows them to check in with the front desk and fill out any new patient paperwork. Patients should also bring with them:

  • Their medical insurance card
  • A list of medications they are using
  • Knowledge of their medical and family history
  • Copay, if needed

During the first visit, the dermatologist will provide a thorough evaluation of the problem at hand in order to offer a proper diagnosis of the condition patients are dealing with. Then, treatment options are discussed. Treatment may include in-office therapies or prescription medication that is used at home.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Make sure the area being examined is clean and accessible. Bring with you a list of any medications, including vitamins and supplements you may be taken, as many of these may impact your skin, hair, or nails due to side effects. Our dermatologists also want to make sure that there is not a mix of medications that could be harmful if prescribed together. If you are using any hair or skin products already, be sure to mention these if necessary.

How long does the appointment take?

This varies depending on the purpose of the visit. An annual skin cancer screening can take an hour or longer, while a quick evaluation of an unusual rash and prescription of topical medications shouldn’t last more than 15 minutes.
